Can You Add Celo to MetaMask?

Yes. Celo launched as a standalone Layer 1 in 2020, then became the first major chain to complete a full migration onto Ethereum on March 26, 2025, relaunching as an OP Stack rollup within the Optimism Superchain.

4. Switch over: Select Celo from MetaMask's network menu. The balance will sit at zero until you deposit or withdraw CELO to the address.

Test CELO is free from the official faucet or Google Cloud's Web3 faucet. The network resets periodically, so nothing deployed or held there should be treated as permanent.

How to Get CELO for Gas

Transactions on Celo cost around a tenth of a cent or less, so a few dollars of CELO covers months of ordinary wallet use. There are two practical ways to fund a fresh MetaMask address.

The simplest is an exchange withdrawal. CELO trades on most major platforms, and the important step is selecting the Celo network on the withdrawal screen rather than an ERC-20 version of the token on Ethereum. The transfer usually arrives within a minute.
