Summary: Rabobank does not sell crypto. To buy Bitcoin, customers must send euros from the Rabo App to a MiCA-licensed exchange. Transfers are free and usually arrive within seconds. The main constraints are Rabobank’s default €5,000 daily limit and the four-hour activation period for any increase.

Bybit is well suited to Rabobank customers. Bybit EU GmbH holds a MiCA license from Austria's FMA (FN 636180i), which passports into the Netherlands. It offers free SEPA deposits, 0.10% spot trading fees and more than 2,000 assets.

Rabobank may ask for proof of crypto funds’ origin, including wallet screenshots. Because the bank faces a criminal case over past anti-money-laundering failures, keep exchange statements ready for larger transfers.

Can I Buy Bitcoin with Rabobank?

You can buy Bitcoin using a Rabobank account, but not inside the Rabo App. The bank offers no crypto trading, wallet or custody service to personal customers. Its page on virtual currencies instead warns about price volatility, pump-and-dump schemes and money laundering. Customers must buy through a licensed exchange and fund the account from a Rabobank betaalrekening (current account).

Rabobank processes the payment like a standard bank transfer. It imposes no dedicated crypto limit or exchange blocklist. Payments therefore use the customer’s normal daily limit and reach euro-area IBANs within about ten seconds. Our first SEPA payment from a Rabo account to Bybit EU was credited before the exchange tab refreshed.

The main friction comes from compliance checks. Under the Wwft, the Dutch anti-money-laundering law, Rabobank may request evidence showing where crypto funds originated. This can include wallet screenshots or public keys, particularly when proceeds return to the account after a profitable sale. A criminal case covering customer checks between 2016 and 2021 helps explain why Rabobank asks more questions than ING or ABN AMRO, which settled similar cases years ago.

How to Buy Crypto with Rabobank

For Rabobank customers who want withdrawable crypto, a SEPA transfer from the Rabo App to Bybit is the cheapest option. Bybit EU GmbH is supervised by Austria's FMA and serves Dutch residents through bybit.eu. Euro deposits are free and generally arrive within seconds.

Steps to buy crypto with Rabobank:

  1. Create a Bybit EU account: Register on Bybit and complete identity checks (KYC) using a Dutch passport, identiteitskaart or driving license. Dutch residents are onboarded by Bybit EU GmbH, the MiCA-licensed entity, rather than the global platform.
  2. Copy the deposit details: Open Assets in Bybit EU, select Deposit and then Fiat. Choose EUR and SEPA. Copy the IBAN, beneficiary name and payment reference. Do not edit the reference because Bybit uses it to match the payment to your account.
  3. Check your daglimiet: In the Rabo App, go to Instellingen, Betaalrekeningen and then Daglimiet overboeken. The default limit is €5,000 per day. You can increase it yourself to €50,000, but the higher limit takes four hours to activate. Make the change on the morning of the purchase and add an end date so the limit automatically drops back.
  4. Send the transfer: Add Bybit as a new payee and enter "Bybit EU GmbH" in full. The IBAN-Naam Check compares this name with the receiving bank’s records. Since last October, the check has covered foreign IBANs as well as Dutch accounts. Approve the transfer in the app or with your Rabo Scanner. When the screen displays "Het geld staat direct op de rekening," the deposit should arrive within seconds.
  5. Place the order: After the EUR appears in your Bybit EU balance, open the BTC/EUR market and place a limit order. Bybit’s one-click buy screen includes a wider spread than the 0.10% order-book fee, so we use it only for an initial test worth a few euros.

Fees, Tax and Transfer Limits for Rabobank Customers

Rabobank does not charge for the bank transfer. Trading costs come from the exchange, while the Belastingdienst taxes crypto as part of a person’s wealth rather than taxing each sale.

Rabobank costs and limits

  • Euro transfer (Eurobetaling): Free and instant to euro-area banks that accept instant payments, which has included nearly all of them since last October. Payments to the remaining banks arrive within one working day.
  • Daglimiet: The default is €5,000 per day, shared across app transfers and iDEAL | Wero payments. Customers can raise the limit in the Rabo App to €50,000. Increases have a fixed four-hour delay, while decreases take effect immediately. Transfers above €50,000 require a phone call or branch visit with ID.
  • iDEAL | Wero: Rabobank is gradually renaming iDEAL payments as iDEAL | Wero and moving them to the European Wero platform. The migration is expected to finish by the end of 2027. If an exchange supports this payment method, customers approve it in the Rabo App and the amount counts toward the same daglimiet.
  • IBAN-Naam Check: The check runs on domestic and cross-border euro payments. Enter "Bybit EU GmbH" exactly. Using a partial name may produce a mismatch warning that must be overridden.
  • Cards: Rabobank debit cards work through exchange card gateways. However, purchases through Apple Pay and Google Pay on Bybit EU carry a fee near 2%. Cards are therefore best reserved for a small initial test.
  • Wwft checks: Rabobank may ask customers to document the source of crypto funds. It can also request wallet screenshots or public keys. Exchange statements and the customer’s latest box 3 return can answer these requests quickly.
  • Business accounts: Rabobank barred business customers from buying and selling crypto in 2021. The trade association VBNL subsequently complained to the competition authority ACM. This guide applies only to personal accounts.

Bybit fees

  • SEPA deposit: Free.
  • Spot trading: 0.10% maker and taker at the entry tier. Fees decline based on balance or 30-day trading volume.
  • Instant Buy: The quote includes a spread several times larger than the order-book fee.
  • Crypto withdrawal: Network fee only. Withdrawing a stablecoin through a low-cost chain costs cents.
  • EUR withdrawal to Rabobank: SEPA costs 0.08% plus €5.50 and takes one to three days. The ZEN payment app charges a flat €1.60 and processes the withdrawal almost immediately.

Dutch tax on crypto

  • Box 3: The Belastingdienst classifies crypto as "overige bezittingen" (other assets) in box 3. Holdings are valued at the exchange price on 1 January. The system assumes a 6% return and taxes that amount at 36% above a tax-free allowance of €59,357 per person, or €118,714 for fiscal partners. Individual sales are not taxed.
  • Tegenbewijsregeling: Taxpayers whose actual return across all box 3 assets was below the assumed return can submit evidence and pay tax on the real figure. A system based on actual gains is planned for 2028.
  • DAC8 reporting: Since 1 January, licensed exchanges have collected identity and transaction data on Dutch customers for the Belastingdienst under DAC8, the EU tax-reporting directive. The figures in an exchange account should therefore match those reported in the tax return (aangifte).

A €5,000 Bitcoin purchase costs nothing at Rabobank and approximately €5 on Bybit EU’s order book, provided any required daglimiet increase was activated four hours beforehand.

Best Exchanges for Rabobank Customers

The Netherlands ended its transition period early, so every exchange legally serving Rabobank customers now requires a MiCA license. Since 30 June 2025, platforms operating in the country have needed authorization from the AFM or a license passported from another EU regulator. Last September, the AFM warned the public about MEXC for operating without one.

Rabobank Cryptocurrency Policy

Rabobank provides no service for personal customers to buy, hold or earn returns on crypto, and it has not announced plans to introduce one. Its public guidance focuses on the risks associated with digital assets. Payments to licensed exchanges remain subject to the same fraud screening used for other transfers.

The bank’s source-of-funds questions reflect its regulatory history. DNB first identified weaknesses in Rabobank’s anti-money-laundering controls in 2018. The issue became a criminal investigation in 2022, and prosecutors announced charges in April last year after settlement discussions failed. This March, the Amsterdam court allowed the Public Prosecution Service to request customer files covering the period up to the present. Given that scrutiny, the bank may seek additional evidence when crypto proceeds enter an account.

The regulatory position for exchanges is established. MiCA has applied to crypto services in the Netherlands since 30 December 2024. The AFM grants licenses and supervises conduct, while DNB monitors capital. Platforms operating under the previous DNB registration had until 30 June 2025 to obtain a MiCA license.

About Rabobank

Rabobank traces its history to farmers’ credit cooperatives established during the 1890s. Two central organizations were created in 1898: the Coöperatieve Centrale Raiffeisen-Bank in Utrecht and the Coöperatieve Centrale Boerenleenbank in Eindhoven. They merged in 1972 to form Rabobank.

The institution remains a cooperative under the name Coöperatieve Rabobank U.A. It is owned by around two million members, serves roughly nine million Dutch customers and operates from its head office on the Croeselaan in Utrecht.

Personal customers use the Rabo App and Rabo Online Bankieren. Payments can be approved through the app or with the Rabo Scanner, a small hardware device that reads a color code displayed on screen. Current accounts are offered through packages such as Rabo DirectPakket and BasisPakket. Rabobank also provides savings accounts, mortgages, insurance and investments. Together with ING and ABN AMRO, it is one of the three banks directing the migration from iDEAL to Wero.

The European Central Bank supervises Rabobank through the Single Supervisory Mechanism alongside DNB, while the AFM oversees conduct. The Dutch deposit guarantee scheme protects eligible deposits up to €100,000 per person per bank. Crypto held on an exchange is not covered.

About Rabobank

Bottom Line

Rabobank does not block crypto purchases, but its payment limits require preparation. Raise the daglimiet at least four hours before buying and enter Bybit EU GmbH as the full beneficiary name. The euros should then reach the exchange within seconds at no cost. Keep supporting records available because Rabobank may ask where the funds originated, while the Belastingdienst will already receive data from the exchange.

Bybit ranks first for Rabobank customers based on cost and asset coverage. It offers free SEPA deposits, 0.10% spot fees and more than 2,000 assets under a license recognized by the AFM. Bitvavo is the Amsterdam-based alternative for customers who prefer an AFM-licensed company with Dutch-language support.
