Summary: Santander's crypto rules change with the border. Spanish customers can fund any licensed exchange freely, and the group sells five coins through Openbank, its digital bank, while Santander UK caps exchange payments at £1,000 per transaction and £3,000 per rolling month.

We point Santander customers to Kraken because its approvals mirror the bank's two biggest retail markets. A Central Bank of Ireland MiCA licence covers Spain, FCA registration (FRN 928768) covers the UK, bank deposits are free, and Kraken Pro charges 0.25% and 0.40% on spot.

The practical snag sits inside the Santander app rather than at the exchange. Spanish accounts default to a €6,000 ceiling per online transfer under the Contrato de Banca Digital, so raise it through Superlínea or a branch before a larger deposit.

Can I Buy Bitcoin with Santander?

Yes in every core market, though the mechanics depend on which entity holds your account.

  • Spain: The Santander app has no crypto desk, but euros move freely to platforms authorised under MiCA. Our Cuenta Online transfers reached Kraken with nothing beyond the usual Santander Key confirmation, and the realistic venues appear in our best crypto exchanges in Spain guide.
  • UK: Permitted within hard caps. Payments the bank identifies as going to a crypto exchange are limited to £1,000 per transaction and £3,000 in any rolling 30-day period, applied across online banking, phone, CHAPS, open banking and branch, and Binance payments are stopped outright. Inbound funds from exchanges are unrestricted.
  • Openbank: The group's digital bank sells BTC, ETH, LTC, POL and ADA in-app at 1.49% per trade with no custody fee, first in Germany from September 2025 and in Spain from November 2025. It needs an Openbank account rather than a Santander España one, and our Openbank guide covers it in detail.
  • Other markets: Retail arms in the US, Brazil and Mexico sell no crypto, so customers there fund locally regulated exchanges.

How to Buy Crypto with Santander

A SEPA transfer from the Santander app to Kraken is the cheapest way for a Spanish customer to own coins they can withdraw, and the same account serves UK customers over Faster Payments inside the bank's caps.

Steps to buy crypto with Santander:

  1. Create an account: Register on Kraken and pass KYC with your DNI, NIE or passport. Spanish residents contract with Payward Europe Solutions under the Central Bank of Ireland, while newly verified UK retail accounts sit out a mandatory 24-hour cooling-off period before trading.
  2. Copy the deposit details: Open your EUR balance in Kraken, pick SEPA, and note the IBAN, beneficiary name and deposit reference. UK customers select GBP and Faster Payments instead. The reference ties the money to your account, and dropping it usually means manual review.
  3. Check your Santander limits: Spanish accounts carry a default €6,000 ceiling per transfer under the Contrato de Banca Digital, which a branch or Superlínea call lifts to €30,000, and SEPA Instant tops out at €15,000 per operation. UK payments must stay under £1,000 each and £3,000 per rolling month.
  4. Send the transfer: Add Kraken as a new beneficiary and enter the account holder name exactly as shown in the deposit screen, since the VOP check applied to every SEPA payment since October 2025 flags any mismatch. Approve with Santander Key. Our first Instant transfer landed in under a minute.
  5. Place the order: Once the balance shows, open BTC/EUR or your preferred pair on Kraken Pro. Past a few hundred euros we switch to limit orders, because the Instant Buy quote carries a 1% fee plus a spread the 0.25% and 0.40% book rates avoid.

Fees, Tax and Transfer Limits for Santander Customers

The charges that matter sit on the exchange, and the tax sits with you.

Santander costs and limits

  • Standard SEPA transfer: Free online from Spanish accounts, settling in one business day.
  • SEPA Instant: Free since the January 2025 EU rule that ended instant-transfer surcharges, capped by Santander at €15,000 per operation, one of the widest settings among Spanish high-street banks alongside Sabadell and Abanca.
  • Online banking ceiling: €6,000 per transfer by default under the Contrato de Banca Digital, adjustable to €30,000 through a branch or Superlínea, and the usual reason a first large deposit bounces.
  • UK exchange payments: £1,000 per transaction and £3,000 per rolling 30-day period wherever the destination is identified as a crypto exchange, with Binance payments refused entirely in line with the FCA's 2021 warning.
  • Card deposits: Santander debit cards clear on most exchange gateways at a 1.5% to 3.5% surcharge, so we keep them for a small first test.
  • AML review: The bank is supervised by the ECB and the Banco de España under Ley 10/2010, and inbound exchange proceeds of €10,000 or more can prompt a source-of-funds request. Exchange statements and past Modelo 100 filings settle these quickly.

Tax on the gains

  • Spain: Profits belong in the savings base at 19% to 30%, with the 30% band applying above €300,000 since Ley 7/2024 took effect in January 2025. Crypto held abroad worth more than €50,000 at year end goes on Modelo 721 by 31 March.
  • Automatic reporting: DAC8 has obliged licensed exchanges to report client balances and transactions since January this year, so the Agencia Tributaria will receive that data automatically.
  • UK: Disposals fall under Capital Gains Tax at 18% or 24% above the £3,000 annual exemption, and the Cryptoasset Reporting Framework now has UK platforms reporting user and transaction data to HMRC.

Kraken fees

  • SEPA and Faster Payments deposits: Free.
  • Kraken Pro spot: 0.25% maker and 0.40% taker at the entry tier, falling with 30-day volume.
  • Instant Buy: A 1% fee plus a spread inside the quote. Fine for a €50 test, expensive at size.
  • Card deposits: Around 3.75% plus a small fixed charge, which we skip.
  • Crypto withdrawals: An asset-specific fee close to the network cost, usually under a dollar for USDT on Tron (TRC-20).
  • EUR or GBP back to Santander: Free or a small flat charge.

A free transfer feeding 0.25% book fees keeps the all-in cost of a €1,000 purchase under €5, well below the 1.49% Openbank charges per trade, and the coins can leave for your own wallet at any time.

Santander Cryptocurrency Policy

Santander runs a two-speed policy. The Spanish retail bank treats transfers to authorised platforms as ordinary payments, while Santander UK frames crypto as a fraud channel and holds customers to the caps and Binance block. Neither position prevents buying on a regulated exchange.

The group builds its crypto business elsewhere. Openbank carries the MiCA-licensed retail offering, with more tokens and crypto-to-crypto conversions planned. Private Banking clients in Switzerland have traded BTC and ETH under Taurus custody since 2023, the One Pay FX payments app has run on Ripple technology since 2018, and the bank has reportedly explored dollar- and euro-pegged stablecoins.

On the exchange side, MiCA has governed Spanish crypto services since 30 December 2024 under CNMV supervision, and since the transitional window closed on 1 July 2026, only authorised CASPs or firms passporting an EU licence can serve Spanish clients. A quick check against our MiCA-licensed exchanges list before wiring money removes the main counterparty risk.

Rival banks have moved the same way. BBVA launched its own in-app Bitcoin and Ether trading, while CaixaBank customers rely on the same exchange path Santander's do. In the UK, anyone who trips the caps regularly keeps a second bank for exchange funding, and our best crypto exchanges in the UK guide compares the FCA-registered options.

About Santander

Banco Santander S.A. was chartered by royal decree in 1857 to finance trade between the port of Santander and Latin America. It now serves around 176 million customers across ten core markets in Europe and the Americas, with listings in Madrid and New York. The registered office stays in Santander, with operations run from Boadilla del Monte outside Madrid.

Spanish retail banking runs through the Santander app, with Cuenta Online and Cuenta Smart accounts, Visa and Mastercard cards, and brokerage. Openbank ranks as one of the group's five global businesses, which is why the crypto service lives there instead of the main app. Santander UK plc, built around the 2004 Abbey National acquisition, runs as a separately capitalised subsidiary.

Prudential supervision rests with the European Central Bank under the Single Supervisory Mechanism and the Banco de España domestically, the CNMV oversees Spanish markets activity, and Santander UK answers to the PRA and FCA.

About Santander

Bottom Line

Buying Bitcoin as a Santander customer is straightforward once the entity rules are clear. In Spain, lift the transfer ceiling past the €6,000 default, let the VOP check match the beneficiary name, and euros reach a licensed venue in seconds for free. In the UK, keep each payment under £1,000 and the rolling month under £3,000, and never point one at Binance.

Kraken fits both sides of that split, holding a Central Bank of Ireland MiCA licence for Spain and FCA registration for the UK, with free deposits and 0.25% book fees. Our Kraken review covers the platform in depth. Openbank remains the in-house alternative for anyone who wants everything under the Santander brand and accepts 1.49% per trade.
