How to Buy Crypto with BoursoBank (Boursorama)

How to Buy Crypto with BoursoBank (Boursorama)

Summary: BoursoBank (formerly Boursorama Banque) does not offer direct crypto trading, but it allows SEPA transfers to MiCA-licensed exchanges and has added crypto ETNs to its brokerage platform since March 2025.

For direct Bitcoin ownership with lower fees, Bybit is a better option because it is MiCA-licensed by Austria's FMA and passported to France through the AMF, accepts free SEPA EUR deposits, and offers 2,000+ assets.

The default SEPA transfer limit on BoursoBank is €15,000 per account, and it can be adjusted at any time in your online banking settings. SEPA transfers are free.

Can I Buy Bitcoin with BoursoBank?

Yes, but not directly. Since March 2025, BoursoBank offers crypto ETNs from CoinShares and iShares (BlackRock) on its brokerage platform, covering Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Solana, and Cardano. You buy these from a standard compte-titres.

But ETNs are debt instruments, not actual crypto. You do not own Bitcoin. You cannot withdraw to a wallet or use it on-chain, and you pay brokerage fees on top of the ETN's annual management charge.

For direct ownership, I transfer EUR from BoursoBank to a MiCA-licensed exchange in France and buy there. BoursoBank does not block SEPA transfers to regulated exchanges and even aggregates external exchange accounts (Coinbase, Binance, Kraken) into your dashboard.

How to Buy Crypto with BoursoBank

A SEPA transfer from BoursoBank to Bybit is the cheapest funding path. Both sides are free, the transfer settles in 1 to 2 business days (or seconds via SEPA Instant), and Bybit gives you access to spot, derivatives, and earn products once EUR arrives.

Steps to buy crypto with BoursoBank:

  1. Create an Account: Sign up on Bybit and complete KYC with your French ID card or passport. Bybit EU is MiCA-licensed by Austria's FMA and passported to France via the AMF.
  2. Add BoursoBank as a Funding Source: In Bybit, go to Buy Crypto > Fiat Deposit > EUR and select SEPA. Copy the IBAN, beneficiary name, and reference exactly as shown.
  3. Send a SEPA Transfer: In BoursoBank, go to Virements, add Bybit's IBAN as a new beneficiary, and send the EUR amount. Newly added beneficiaries may trigger a reduced cap (as low as €1,500 on the first transfer). This increases automatically after the initial transaction clears.
  4. Buy Crypto: Once EUR arrives, search for BTC/EUR or the pair you want, review the fee, and place the order.

BoursoBank Crypto ETNs vs Buying Crypto on an Exchange

BoursoBank's ETNs are convenient from a familiar brokerage interface, but they come with drawbacks:

  • No ownership: ETNs track Bitcoin's price but you never hold the underlying asset. You cannot send BTC to a wallet or use it in DeFi.
  • Higher costs: BoursoBank charges brokerage fees per trade, and the ETN carries an annual management fee (0.35% to 1%+). On Bybit, spot trading is 0.10% with no ongoing holding cost.
  • Counterparty risk: An ETN is an unsecured debt obligation. If the issuer defaults, your ETN could lose value independent of Bitcoin's price.
  • Limited selection: Five assets (BTC, ETH, XRP, SOL, ADA). Bybit offers 2,000+.

The ETN route makes sense only if you want crypto exposure inside a compte-titres and do not care about direct ownership. For everyone else, buying on an exchange is cheaper, gives you actual crypto, and opens up staking, DeFi, and self-custody.

Fees for BoursoBank Customers

Costs split into two parts: what BoursoBank charges to send the transfer, and what Bybit charges to receive, trade, and withdraw.

BoursoBank transfer costs

  • SEPA standard: Free. Settles in 1 to 2 business days.
  • SEPA Instant: Free since October 2025 under EU regulation. Settles in seconds. Daily limit €30,000 across all accounts, but newly added beneficiaries face a reduced cap.
  • Default transfer ceiling: €15,000 per account, adjustable from "Gérer mes plafonds de virement." No stated maximum.
  • Card deposits: BoursoBank Visa cards (Welcome, Ultim, Metal) work on some exchanges, but gateway surcharges of 1.5% to 3.5% apply. I avoid this when SEPA is available.

Bybit fees

  • SEPA deposit: Free.
  • Spot trading: 0.10% maker / 0.10% taker at the standard tier.
  • Instant Buy: Higher spread built into the quoted price. I use spot for anything over a few hundred euros.
  • Crypto withdrawal: Network fee applies. TRC-20 for USDT is usually cheapest (under $1).
  • EUR withdrawal via SEPA: Free or minimal fee back to BoursoBank.

All-in cost via SEPA (€0 transfer + 0.10% trading fee) makes this one of the cheapest ways to buy crypto in France.

BoursoBank Cryptocurrency Policy

BoursoBank does not offer direct crypto trading, custody, or wallet services. It provides indirect exposure through crypto ETNs (CoinShares and iShares products covering BTC, ETH, XRP, SOL, ADA) and unrestricted SEPA transfers to MiCA-licensed exchanges. The bank also aggregates external exchange accounts (Coinbase, Binance, Kraken, Paymium) into your dashboard for a consolidated view.

As a subsidiary of Société Générale, BoursoBank sits within the broader SG group's digital asset strategy. SG's subsidiary Forge has issued its own stablecoin (EUR CoinVertible) and partnered with Bitpanda, though these services are not available to BoursoBank retail customers.

France was one of the first EU countries to regulate crypto through the PACTE Act of 2019, creating the PSAN framework under the AMF. Since December 30, 2024, EU MiCA has replaced PSAN with CASP licensing. Existing PSANs have until July 1, 2026 to obtain MiCA authorisation or cease operations.

Tax Implications of Crypto in France

France taxes crypto gains through the PFU (Prélèvement Forfaitaire Unique). As of January 1, 2026, the rate increased from 30% to 31.4% (12.8% income tax + 18.6% social contributions).

  • Taxable events: Only disposals to fiat (EUR, USD) or purchases of goods/services trigger tax. Crypto-to-crypto swaps (BTC to ETH) are not taxed.
  • €305 threshold: If total annual disposal value stays below €305, gains are exempt. Exceed it by €1 and the entire gain becomes taxable.
  • Loss offset: Losses offset gains within the same tax year only. No carryforward.
  • Reporting: Declare gains on Formulaire 2086. All exchange accounts outside France (Bybit, Binance, Kraken) must be declared annually on Formulaire 3916-bis.
  • Progressive option: You can waive the 12.8% income tax and elect progressive rates instead. This benefits low earners in the 0% or 11% brackets.

BoursoBank (formerly Boursorama Banque) is France's largest online bank with over 7.2 million customers. A subsidiary of Société Générale, regulated by the ACPR. Offers free checking, tiered Visa cards (Welcome, Ultim, Metal), savings (Livret A, LDDS, PEL), brokerage through Boursorama Bourse (100,000+ instruments including stocks, ETFs, OPCVM, and since 2025, crypto ETNs), and insurance. Regularly ranked France's least expensive bank.

About BoursoBank

Bottom Line

BoursoBank's crypto ETNs are a step forward, but they are expensive, limited to five assets, and do not give you actual Bitcoin. For direct ownership at lower fees, a SEPA transfer from BoursoBank to Bybit is the better path.

The transfer is free on both sides, BoursoBank does not block payments to MiCA-licensed exchanges, and the €15,000 cap can be raised from your settings in seconds. Once EUR lands on Bybit, you pay 0.10% to trade.

One admin note: as a French tax resident, declare your Bybit account on Formulaire 3916-bis each year, even if you did not sell anything. Keep records of every transaction in EUR for Formulaire 2086 when you realise gains.
