Summary: Interactive Brokers runs one of the few genuine spot crypto services inside a traditional brokerage. US and UK clients trade 20 coins through Paxos or Zerohash at 0.12% to 0.18% per order, Hong Kong clients get Bitcoin and Ether through OSL, and everyone else is limited to crypto ETPs and futures.

For coins we can withdraw, stake, and hold across more than 20 markets, we move cash from IBKR to Kraken. It holds the FinCEN, FCA, MiCA, and AUSTRAC approvals that line up with IBKR's main client countries, deposits are free, and Kraken Pro trades from 0.25%.

IBKR never blocks the journey, but it will only pay a bank account in your own name. Cash travels from IBKR to your bank first and then on to the exchange, with the first withdrawal in any calendar month free.

Can I Buy Bitcoin with Interactive Brokers?

Yes, and where you live decides how direct the purchase is. Clients of the US and UK entities buy spot crypto inside the IBKR platform itself, with execution and custody handled by Paxos Trust Company or Zerohash depending on the account. The menu spans 20 assets, from Bitcoin, Ether, Solana, and XRP to newer listings like Sui and Monad.

A second path exists in every IBKR account through the securities side. Spot Bitcoin and Ether ETPs, crypto equities, and CME crypto futures all trade like any other listed product, which suits investors who want exposure without leaving regulated fund products. The coins inside those products are never yours to move.

We use the third path for anything beyond the 20 supported assets. Withdraw cash from IBKR to your bank, send it to a regulated exchange such as Kraken, and buy on an order book with the option to take the coins into your own wallet. Our first test withdrawal reached a linked checking account the next morning, and the follow-on ACH to Kraken landed the same day.

Where Interactive Brokers Offers Crypto

Each IBKR entity answers to a different regulator, so the crypto shelf changes at the border.

  • United States (IB LLC): Full spot access through Paxos or Zerohash, with commissions of 0.12% to 0.18% and a $1.75 minimum. Since March, clients can transfer coins in from external wallets without selling first, and withdrawals to self-custody are supported.
  • United Kingdom (IB UK): The same Paxos-powered spot service. Interactive Brokers (U.K.) Limited is FCA-authorised under reference number 208159 and registered as a cryptoasset firm under the Money Laundering Regulations, the approval every UK platform selling crypto must hold.
  • Hong Kong (IBKR HK): Bitcoin and Ether trade through SFC-licensed OSL Digital Securities at 0.20% to 0.30% with a $2.25 minimum, and IBKR was the first SFC-licensed securities broker cleared to offer this to retail investors.
  • European Union (IBIE): No spot service. Clients under the Irish entity trade crypto ETPs, ETNs, and futures instead, so a MiCA-licensed exchange remains the way to own actual coins.
  • Australia (IBKR Australia): Spot crypto has not been switched on either. Australians hold ASX-listed crypto ETFs through IBKR or fund an AUSTRAC-registered exchange from their bank.
Where Interactive Brokers Offers Crypto

How to Buy Crypto with Interactive Brokers

The best method for buying crypto with Interactive Brokers is moving cash to a regulated exchange, which unlocks hundreds of assets beyond IBKR's 20 and coins you can self-custody.

We use Kraken, funded through the bank we link to IBKR, since IBKR refuses withdrawals to accounts outside your own name. The first monthly withdrawal is free, as are Kraken's ACH, Faster Payments, and SEPA deposits.

Steps to buy crypto with Interactive Brokers:

  1. Open and verify a Kraken account: Register at Kraken and complete identity checks with a government ID. US accounts need a Social Security number before dollar funding opens, and newly verified UK accounts sit through a 24-hour cooling-off period under FCA promotion rules.
  2. Withdraw from IBKR to your own bank: In Client Portal, go to Transfer & Pay, pick your bank, and send the amount you plan to invest. Kraken's deposit references would fail IBKR's name-match check, which is why the money cannot skip your bank. The first withdrawal each calendar month is free, and ours settled overnight.
  3. Mind your daily withdrawal cap: IBKR ties limits to your security device. Accounts on basic two-factor sit near $50,000 a day, the IB Key mobile app lifts that to $1,000,000, and the physical Digital Security Card+ removes the ceiling. Activate IB Key before a large purchase rather than after a rejected request.
  4. Fund Kraken from the same bank: Connect the account in Kraken and deposit by ACH through Plaid in the US, Faster Payments in the UK, or SEPA in the euro area. All three are free, and US buyers should expect a hold on crypto withdrawals for several days after a fresh ACH deposit.
  5. Trade on Kraken Pro, not Instant Buy: Pro charges about 0.25% maker and 0.40% taker against the live order book, while Instant Buy hides a wider spread. A limit order a few dollars inside the market filled instantly in our test, and the coins were free to send to a hardware wallet once the deposit hold passed.

Fees and Transfer Limits for IBKR Customers

IBKR keeps the moving costs close to zero. What deserves attention is the withdrawal calendar and the security-device caps.

Interactive Brokers costs and limits

  • Spot crypto commission: 0.12% to 0.18% of trade value by monthly volume, with a $1.75 minimum capped at 1% of the order, and no added spread or custody charge. Paxos accounts carry a $0.15 monthly fee passed through at cost.
  • Cash withdrawal: First request in each calendar month is free. After that, a USD bank wire costs $10 and a US ACH costs $1, plus any correspondent bank charges IBKR does not control.
  • Daily withdrawal ceiling: Around $50,000 on standard two-factor, $1,000,000 with the IB Key app, and no limit with a Digital Security Card+.
  • Name-match rule: Withdrawals go only to bank accounts in the account holder's name, so a direct payment to an exchange's deposit details will be rejected.
  • Stablecoin funding: IBKR accounts accept USDC deposits around the clock through Zerohash, with a 0.30% conversion fee and a $1 minimum, useful when a wire would miss the banking day.
  • Crypto transfers: Supported coins move in and out of the linked Paxos or Zerohash account, so an existing Bitcoin position can arrive without a taxable sale.

Kraken costs

  • Deposits: ACH, Faster Payments, and SEPA are all free. Card and wallet top-ups add roughly 3.75%, which we skip.
  • Trading: Kraken Pro runs near 0.25% maker and 0.40% taker at the entry tier and falls with 30-day volume.
  • Withdrawals: Fiat costs a dollar or two by domestic transfer, and crypto costs the network fee only, usually under a dollar for stablecoins on a cheap chain.

An IBKR client paying 0.18% per crypto trade already sits below most exchange app pricing. The Kraken transfer earns its place on asset range and the ability to self-custody, since IBKR's spot service caps out at 20 coins.

Kraken leads because its permissions mirror where IBKR's retail base lives, and our Kraken review covers the platform in full. New York and Maine residents should start with Coinbase instead, since Kraken does not serve either state.

Interactive Brokers Cryptocurrency Policy

IBKR places no blocks, caps, or warnings on crypto. Its policy question is which digital asset products to sell, and the list keeps growing. The firm acts as broker only, so trades settle at Paxos or Zerohash and the coins sit in an account in the client's own name, outside SIPC protection. That agency model let IBKR offer crypto for years without carrying custody risk on its own books.

Its investments follow the same policy. IBKR led a $104 million funding round in Zerohash last September that valued the firm at $1 billion, switched on round-the-clock USDC account funding in January, and has named RLUSD and PYUSD as the next stablecoins to support. It has also reportedly weighed issuing a stablecoin of its own.

The US regulatory shift explains why competitors caught up. The GENIUS Act stablecoin law and clearer banking guidance pulled the large brokerages into spot crypto, with Charles Schwab and Fidelity launching rival services within months of each other. IBKR predates them both, trading spot since late 2021 at lower commissions than either.

Tax reporting covers every venue in this guide. US custodial brokers, IBKR's crypto partners included, file Form 1099-DA on digital asset sales as cost-basis reporting phases in, and UK platforms report client data to HMRC under the Cryptoasset Reporting Framework. The tax office sees disposals whichever platform executes them.

About Interactive Brokers

Interactive Brokers is an automated global brokerage founded in 1978 by Thomas Peterffy and listed on Nasdaq as a member of the S&P 500. Its affiliates execute and custody trades on more than 170 markets, serving individual investors, hedge funds, advisors, and introducing brokers from a single platform.

Clients trade through Trader Workstation, the Client Portal, IBKR Desktop, and the mobile apps, across stocks, options, futures, currencies, bonds, funds, event contracts, and spot crypto where the local entity permits it. Client equity passed $780 billion in early 2026.

Interactive Brokers LLC answers to the SEC and CFTC in the US with SIPC membership on securities, IB UK to the FCA, IBIE to the Central Bank of Ireland, IBKR Australia to ASIC, and IBKR Hong Kong to the SFC. Crypto positions at Paxos, Zerohash, or OSL sit outside SIPC and FSCS cover, a distinction the account opening documents state plainly.

Bottom Line

Interactive Brokers now runs the strongest crypto offer among global brokerages. US and UK clients trade 20 coins at 0.12% to 0.18% with external wallet transfers in both directions, Hong Kong gets a clean SFC-regulated channel, and the pricing embarrasses most one-tap apps.

Kraken still earns the second account. Its licences track IBKR's biggest markets, deposits from a linked bank are free, Pro fees start near IBKR's own, and the shelf runs past 500 assets with staking and self-custody on top. Withdraw from IBKR to your bank, fund Kraken from there, and keep each month's first IBKR withdrawal for the job so the whole path costs nothing.

Clients of the EU and Australian entities have the clearest case of all, since a regulated exchange is their only way to own coins outright.
