Solana locked in October 21 for Alpenglow, a full replacement of the consensus system its validators use, tied to epoch 1064 starting around 15:00 UTC. The upgrade retires TowerBFT and targets transaction finality of roughly 150 milliseconds, down from about 12.8 seconds under the current design.
Under TowerBFT, validators post votes as onchain transactions and a block finalizes only after 32 slots of them accumulate. Votor, the protocol shipping with Alpenglow, moves votes offchain into certificates, finalizing on the spot when 80% of stake agrees, or after a second round at 60%.
Wallets, apps, programs and fees stay untouched, though vote transactions leaving blocks will sharply shrink Solana's headline TPS without any drop in real activity. Each vote account needs 0.8 SOL for a burned per-epoch Validator Admission Ticket, replacing the roughly 1 SOL spent on vote fees under TowerBFT.
Validators approved the upgrade in September 2025, when SIMD-0326 passed with 98.27% of votes, and TowerBFT stays in charge for 5,000 slots, roughly 18 minutes, after activation before Alpenglow takes over at slot 459,653,000. Rotor, the second half replacing the Turbine broadcast layer, still has no date.
Ledger unveiled an Android device called Atom at its Op3n event in Paris, priced at $849 for a limited Founder's Edition and $899 afterward, with deliveries planned for summer 2027. An FPGA chip walls everyday Android apps off from Secure Mode, where transactions are reviewed and signed.
Solana Mobile, which has sold over 200,000 devices, will bring its Seeker app to Atom, while tamper sensors on a separate battery target the screen-reader implants found in CryptoBilis units. The price sits well above the $69 to $399 Ledger lineup, and Kraken is exploring Atom support.
Mastercard and BVNK launched the Global Money Platform, letting banks, fintechs and enterprises embed multi-currency accounts that hold fiat and stablecoins side by side through a single API. It is the first major integration since Mastercard closed its roughly $1.8 billion BVNK acquisition in August.
Users can tap stablecoin balances to send local-currency payouts through Mastercard Move, with coverage expected across more than 40 currencies and 200-plus countries in 2027, and spend them across its merchant network. Nuvei and Marqeta are among the first integrators, with agentic commerce and tokenized deposits slated next.
Turkish police and intelligence officers detained Hex founder Richard Heart and his wife in Istanbul's Beşiktaş district, acting on an Interpol Red Notice that Finland sought in 2024, Daily Sabah reported. The notice lists a single charge of aggravated tax fraud, though Finland also sought him over an alleged assault.
Officers seized a dozen phones, laptops, graphics cards, rifles, pistols, two drones, gold bracelets and a large amount of cash, according to IHA. The SEC charged Heart in 2023 over $1 billion in unregistered offerings tied to Hex and PulseChain, but a judge dismissed the case in 2025.
Starknet holders opened a seven-day vote on exploring a move to an independent Layer 1 over quantum risks, with 177.6 million STRK cast and 99.91% backing Yes at the time of writing. A Yes would trigger further research, proposals and polls, not an immediate transition.
StarkWare CEO Eli Ben-Sasson argues relying on Ethereum leaves Starknet waiting for its base layer to become quantum-safe and AI-safe. The network already uses hash-based STARK proofs and accounts can adopt post-quantum signatures, but its bridge and data availability remain tied to Ethereum's upgrade timeline.
