Summary: Pearl (PRL) ranks among the 150 largest cryptocurrencies, but no major exchange sells it. Only two small offshore platforms trade native PRL. Most buyers instead use Wrapped Pearl (WPRL), an Ethereum token designed to be backed 1:1 by locked PRL.

We recommend buying WPRL through the Fomo app. It creates a self-custodial wallet whose keys only you hold. You can fund purchases with Apple Pay or a debit card, and Fomo pays the network fee on each swap. Our link reduces its trading fee by 10%.

The wrapped token carries additional risks. Its backing depends on a third-party bridge with three signers, its contract can be upgraded, and most trading runs through one small Uniswap pool. We still prefer WPRL because those risks are visible on a public blockchain. The PRL held by SafeTrade and BigONE cannot be checked in the same way.

Can I Buy Pearl?

Pearl is available to buy, though you cannot simply open an account at a major exchange and search for its ticker. On 9 October, CoinGecko's market list for Pearl showed just two exchanges selling the coin. Neither is a large regulated platform.

  • Wrapped Pearl on Ethereum: Anyone with an Ethereum wallet or a wallet app such as Fomo can buy WPRL. PearlBridge, a service for moving coins between blockchains, issues it as an ERC-20 token, Ethereum's standard token format. WPRL trades against the dollar stablecoins USDT and USDC on Uniswap. This decentralised exchange settles swaps against pooled funds rather than an order book.
  • Native PRL on centralised exchanges: SafeTrade and BigONE list PRL against USDT. Both require you to buy USDT elsewhere and transfer it in, as neither accepts bank or card payments. We recommend neither.
  • United States: US users can access Fomo's token trading, and no exchange decides who may hold a blockchain token such as WPRL. Fomo's leveraged futures remain closed to US persons.
  • Lookalike tickers: Unrelated tokens also use PRL, including Perle on Solana and the older Oyster Pearl. Native Pearl has no contract address on any chain. Its wrapped version exists at a single Ethereum address.
  • Mining: Running AI workloads on Nvidia graphics cards can earn PRL. As more miners join, payouts shrink. Buying will be simpler for most readers.

How to Buy Pearl

To own Pearl in a wallet you control, the simplest route is to fund Fomo with Apple Pay or a debit card and buy WPRL using its contract address. The app swaps against blockchain trading pools, with nearly all WPRL trading on Uniswap. Allow about 1.5% in total costs for a small order.

Steps to buy Pearl:

  1. Install Fomo and create an account: Register through the Fomo sign-up link to attach the 10% fee discount. Check that the app store lists the developer as FOMO Labs, Inc. You can register with an email address or Apple ID. Fomo creates a wallet without a seed phrase, the recovery words most wallets ask you to write down. Afterwards, export your private key from settings. Fomo cannot restore a lost wallet, and our Fomo app review explains how the key is stored.
  2. Fund your balance: Deposit USDC from another wallet, or add dollars using Apple Pay, Google Pay or a debit card. No identity documents are required by Fomo itself, though its card payment partner may request them for larger amounts. Banks treat these purchases like other crypto card payments. Our guide to buying crypto by card covers this.
  3. Find WPRL by contract address: Search for 0x07696DcaB55E62cfef953666b29Fe1970518cB00 rather than typing "Pearl" or "PRL". Wrapped Pearl on Ethereum is the correct result. Double check the address against its Etherscan token page or its Coingecko page. A PRL result on Solana, Base or BNB Chain represents a different asset.
  4. Check the quote and split larger orders: Compare Fomo's quote with CoinGecko's native PRL price before confirming. On 9 October, the main WPRL pool held about $12,500 of sell orders within 2% of the market price. A purchase of a few hundred dollars barely moves the pool, but a single $5,000 swap would push the price up by close to 1%. Spacing out several smaller buys costs less.
  5. Decide where your WPRL will sit: Holding WPRL in Fomo keeps it in your own wallet. To move the token itself, import your exported key into an Ethereum wallet such as MetaMask, as Fomo's documented crypto withdrawals pay out in USDC. You can then use PearlBridge to burn, or destroy, the WPRL and release native PRL to a Pearl address beginning with prl1.

Please remember to do your own research, as there are risks involved with buying a wrapped token outline below. Although you can see from the screenshots below, the Datawallet team holds WPRL using the same method we have outlined!

How to Buy Pearl

Pearl Fees and Limits

For a $500 WPRL purchase through Fomo, we calculate about $2.25 in discounted Fomo fees plus $5 in pool fees, or roughly 1.5% in total. Shallow pool depth adds another cost, which rises with the size of the order.

Fomo fees

  • Trading fee: The standard charge is 0.50% of each trade. Our 10% referral discount brings it down to 0.45%. Some chains have minimum fees for small orders; the app displays the exact amount before confirmation.
  • Network gas: Fomo sponsors the network fee. You do not need ETH in the app to pay for a swap.
  • Card and Apple Pay funding: A payment partner processes deposits and displays its charge on the deposit screen. Compare this with the cost of transferring USDC you already own.
  • Withdrawals: Crypto withdrawals pay out in USDC. In some regions, bank withdrawals are also available and take up to three business days.

WPRL pool and bridge costs

  • Uniswap pool fee: Every quote from the largest WPRL/USDT pool includes its 1% Uniswap pool fee. That charge goes to the people supplying the pool's funds.
  • Price impact: Against roughly $776,000 in daily volume, CoinGecko's WPRL market data showed only about $12,500 available on each side within 2% of the price. A large single order costs noticeably more than the displayed price.
  • Gap to native PRL: On 9 October, WPRL traded at $1.33 and native PRL at $1.39. Their prices track each other only while traders can move coins across the bridge.
  • Bridge fee: At its last published review, PearlBridge charged 0.5% to mint, or create, WPRL. The contract caps mint and burn fees at 1% each, but a single operator key can change the fee without notice.
  • Bridge limits: The bridge's fast lane clears mints of up to 50,000 PRL. Larger amounts wait 24 hours.

Tax by market

  • United States: Under IRS treatment of digital assets as property, swapping USDC for WPRL and later selling it are both reportable events.
  • United Kingdom: Exchanging one token for another counts as a disposal. HMRC applies Capital Gains Tax to cryptoasset disposals above the £3,000 annual exempt amount.
  • Australia: The ATO taxes crypto as a CGT asset. Gains from assets held longer than 12 months receive a 50% discount.
  • Wrapping and unwrapping: Redeeming WPRL for native PRL exchanges one token for another. Several tax authorities consider this a disposal even if its value has not changed. Keep your transaction records and consult an adviser before bridging a position with a large gain.

Best Places to Buy Pearl

In early October, four platforms sold Pearl or its wrapped form. Our top two choices are blockchain-based because their reserves and contract rules are public. At the two centralised exchanges, buyers must trust balances that outsiders cannot check.

PRL/USDT order book, $27 million hot wallet theft in July 2025

Founded in 2018, SafeTrade is a small exchange registered in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. We found no licence from a major financial regulator or published proof of reserves. Nor could we find an independent security audit. On the day we checked, it handled about $3 million in PRL volume, more than half the global total. Much of the traded PRL therefore sits with a company we cannot assess.

A hot wallet theft cost BigONE roughly $27 million in July 2025. The exchange said it would cover customer losses from the internet-connected wallet it uses to pay withdrawals. CoinGecko also showed $2.5 million in daily PRL volume there, but only $133 of sell orders within 2% of the price. Neither fact proves a problem. Taken together, however, they prevent us from vouching for the exchange.

For comparisons of other swap platforms, see our list of the best decentralised exchanges.

Is Wrapped Pearl Safe?

WPRL is safer to verify than exchange-held PRL, though its design adds risk. Unlike Ethereum, Pearl's blockchain has no general smart contracts, the self-running programs that would let it lock coins through code alone.

The process is set out in PearlBridge's architecture document. After you send PRL to a lock address on Pearl, three independent signers watch for the deposit. Two must approve before an Ethereum contract mints an equal amount of WPRL. To reverse the process, WPRL is burned and the bridge operator returns PRL from the lock address.

WPRL is therefore a claim on PRL guarded by a small group, the same model used by early wrapped Bitcoin. Our guide to the best crypto bridges covers designs with less dependence on trusted signers. What WPRL offers is visibility: anyone can compare the publicly recorded lock address and WPRL supply. Every admin action is also recorded on public ledgers.

The main risks to weigh:

  • Signer and key risk: New WPRL requires approval from two of three signers. Separately, the bridge operator holds the keys that release locked PRL. A compromise of either could leave some WPRL without backing.
  • Upgradeable contracts: WPRL runs behind a proxy, according to Etherscan, so its code can be replaced. A multisig wallet, which requires several approvals, must propose admin changes before a 24-hour delay takes effect. The contract also has a function for freezing individual holders.
  • Unnamed operators: We found no statement connecting PearlBridge to Pearl Research Labs. The bridge uses its own name and domain, while its GitHub organisation has no public members or named team.
  • Audit depth: No critical or high-severity findings appear in the bridge's published review from 20 May, though it reports two medium findings. The document describes eleven automated review passes. According to the project, an external audit remains in progress.
  • Small supply: On 9 October, WPRL supply stood at about 2.76 million tokens, worth roughly $3.7 million and representing under 1% of circulating PRL. Such small pools produce sharp price moves and make exits costly during a sell-off.
  • Shutdown terms: PearlBridge describes itself as experimental. Its terms allow a permanent shutdown, after which redemptions depend on what the contracts and remaining locked PRL permit.
  • Imitation tokens: The name Wrapped Pearl can be used by anyone deploying a token. Only the contract address ending in cB00 connects to the bridge.

A small position that you may later redeem for native PRL suits WPRL. A large holding left untouched for years does not. Buyers seeking native coins can bridge out and store them in Oyster, Pearl's official wallet.

About Pearl

Pearl Research Labs, led by computer scientist Omri Weinstein, launched the Pearl blockchain on 27 April 2026. Its software adapts Bitcoin's code, replacing the mining puzzle with matrix multiplication, the arithmetic behind AI models. This lets a graphics card serving a language model compete for PRL rewards at the same time. The project calls the approach Proof of Useful Work.

Of the capped 2.1 billion PRL supply, roughly 340 million have been mined, with about one million more issued daily. There was no advance sale or allocation. Even so, distribution is uneven. More than a third of today's supply was mined during the first six days, when mining was easiest. The circulating supply reported on CoinDesk's Pearl price page is also about 70 million lower than CoinGecko's figure.

On 9 October, PRL traded near $1.39, almost four times its price a month earlier but around 20% below its $1.76 record. The network has one named production partner, Together AI. An independent June study found that most mining produced no AI output. We examine both sides in our Pearl explainer, while our list of the best AI crypto coins compares Pearl with its peers.

About Pearl

Bottom Line

For a coin of its size, Pearl is unusually difficult to buy. Until it gains a regulated exchange listing, buyers must choose between native PRL on two platforms we cannot verify and a wrapped token with visible weaknesses.

Our recommendation is the wrapped version. Through Fomo, a card purchase requires no exchange account and costs about 1.5% in total for a small order. Use the contract address to find WPRL and keep orders small enough for the Uniswap pool to absorb. Export your wallet key on day one.

WPRL remains a claim on PRL that depends on the bridge. Its three signers and upgradeable contract add risk, while the supply is worth just $3.7 million. Alongside the unresolved questions about Pearl itself, these are reasons to keep the position small.
