Summary: Licensed exchanges sell Zcash in the US, UK, EU, Canada and Australia. Japan, South Korea and Dubai bar licensed venues from listing it. Because privacy is optional on Zcash, exchange support for ZEC varies more than for any other top-ten coin.

We recommend Coinbase across all five supported markets. It offers ZEC-USD and ZEC-USDC order books with withdrawals to your own wallet, and holds FinCEN, FCA, MiCA, Canadian restricted dealer and AUSTRAC approvals. New Yorkers must use Gemini instead.

Every exchange we tested pays out transparent ZEC. Only Gemini also withdraws directly into the shielded pool. Most guides overlook what happens after the purchase, including how to shield your coins and the EU's July 2027 deadline.

Can I Buy Zcash?

Zcash is available in most large markets, but access depends on where you live. Shielded transactions conceal the sender, receiver and amount. Regulators therefore treat Zcash differently from Bitcoin's open ledger, and exchanges decide whether to offer it country by country.

  • United States: Yes. Coinbase and Gemini operate ZEC spot markets under FinCEN registration and state licences. When Coinbase listed the coin, it excluded New York. Residents there use Gemini, the first exchange licensed to trade Zcash under a New York trust charter.
  • United Kingdom: Yes. Coinbase's FCA-registered UK entity lists ZEC for UK customers again, having removed it in 2019 at a banking partner's request. Gemini's UK arm also offers it. New accounts at any FCA-registered exchange must wait 24 hours before their first trade.
  • European Union: Yes, for now. Coinbase's Luxembourg MiCA licence covers every EEA state, and its European asset list includes ZEC but excludes Monero. The EU's anti-money laundering regulation bars licensed exchanges from holding anonymity-enhancing coins from 10 July 2027. EU buyers should plan to self-custody or sell before that date.
  • Canada: Yes. Registered as a restricted dealer under the provincial securities regulators, Coinbase Canada sells ZEC for Canadian dollars with funding through Interac e-Transfer.
  • Australia: Yes. Coinbase Australia lists ZEC and accepts PayID deposits. Local platforms Swyftx and CoinSpot also sell it for Australian dollars, and all three are registered with AUSTRAC.
  • Japan, South Korea and Dubai: Not through licensed venues. Japanese exchanges dropped privacy coins in 2018. South Korea's Financial Services Commission banned what it calls dark coins from licensed exchanges in March 2021, while Dubai's VARA prohibits anonymity-enhanced cryptocurrencies outright. Holding ZEC in your own wallet remains legal in each.

How to Buy Zcash

The cheapest way to buy ZEC you control is to fund Coinbase with a free bank transfer and place a limit order on Coinbase Advanced. A simple buy in the main app costs more. In our tests, deposits made through Faster Payments and SEPA both appeared within the hour.

Steps to buy Zcash:

  1. Confirm ZEC is offered where you live: Coinbase sells ZEC in the US outside New York, the UK, every EEA state, Canada and Australia. New Yorkers can open an account with Gemini. Australians who prefer a local platform can use Swyftx, while buyers in Japan, South Korea or Dubai have no licensed seller.
  2. Open and verify a Coinbase account: Register at Coinbase and complete identity checks using photo ID. A mandatory 24-hour cooling-off period applies before UK accounts can make their first trade. Canadian accounts must complete a risk questionnaire before trading.
  3. Deposit your local currency: Use ACH in the US, Faster Payments in the UK, SEPA in the eurozone, Interac e-Transfer in Canada or PayID in Australia. All are free on Coinbase. Copy the reference code from the deposit screen, as missing references are the usual cause of stalled transfers. For bank-side limits in each market, see our Chase, Barclays, N26 and CommBank guides.
  4. Place a limit order on Coinbase Advanced: Select the ZEC-USD or ZEC-USDC order book and set your price. Within four months, ZEC fell from above $600 to near $300 before climbing past $1,000. A market order during a quiet period can therefore fill well away from the last traded price. Entry-tier Advanced fees are 0.40% maker and 0.60% taker, with no added spread. Simple buys in the main app include both a spread and a transaction fee.
  5. Withdraw and decide whether to shield: Coinbase withdraws only to a transparent t-address. For privacy, send the coins to a shielded wallet such as Zodl (formerly Zashi), then shield them into the Ironwood pool. Ledger and Trezor support transparent ZEC only. Using a hardware wallet alone does not shield your coins.

Zcash Fees and Transfer Limits

Moving Zcash costs almost nothing on the network itself. Most charges come from the exchange, while address types impose more meaningful constraints than dollar caps.

Coinbase fees

  • Bank deposits: ACH, Faster Payments, SEPA, Interac e-Transfer and PayID deposits are free. US wires cost $10 in and $25 out.
  • Card purchases: Fees reach 3.99%, so we avoid cards for anything above a test purchase.
  • Coinbase Advanced spot: Maker fees are 0.40% and taker fees 0.60% below $10,000 in 30-day volume. Above that threshold, they fall to 0.25% and 0.40%, respectively. Fees decrease through eight tiers, reaching zero maker fees at institutional volume. Every tier is listed in our Coinbase fees breakdown.
  • Simple trades: Quotes include a spread, with a transaction fee that varies by order size. Simple limit orders carry a separate 1% charge. Coinbase One Preferred members pay no transaction fee on the first $10,000 a month, but the spread still applies and Advanced trades are excluded.
  • ZEC withdrawal: Withdrawals go only to transparent addresses and carry a network fee of a few cents, shown before withdrawal.

Zcash network costs and address rules

  • On-chain fee: Fees depend on transaction complexity rather than congestion. A normal Zcash transfer therefore costs a fraction of a cent regardless of demand.
  • Deposits to exchanges: Send from a transparent address. Both Coinbase and Gemini accept these transfers. Binance requires a special exchange-only address type to verify that funds came from a visible source. If a venue rejects shielded-origin deposits, coins sent from a shielded address can be delayed or returned.
  • Ironwood migration: The Orchard shielded pool stopped accepting deposits on 28 July. You must move any ZEC shielded before then through a one-way turnstile into Ironwood yourself. Migration is not automatic.
  • Shielded withdrawals: Gemini is the only licensed exchange that sends ZEC directly into the shielded pool. It added Ironwood support two days after the upgrade. All other venues covered here withdraw transparent coins.

Tax by market

  • United States: The IRS treats ZEC as property. Selling or swapping it creates a capital gains event, and exchanges now report proceeds on Form 1099-DA. Shielding your own coins is a transfer, not a disposal.
  • United Kingdom: Disposals are subject to Capital Gains Tax above the £3,000 annual exempt amount. UK exchanges began reporting customer data to HMRC under the Cryptoasset Reporting Framework in January.
  • European Union: Each country sets its own tax rules. Germany exempts gains on coins held for over a year, while France applies a flat 30% levy. Under the DAC8 reporting rules that took effect in January, every member state receives exchange data.
  • Canada: The CRA treats ZEC as a commodity for tax purposes. Half of any capital gain is added to your income in the year of sale.
  • Australia: The ATO applies Capital Gains Tax, with a 50% discount on gains from coins held longer than 12 months. Its data-matching programme also collects exchange records.

Best Exchanges to Buy Zcash

Together, these three exchanges cover every market where a licensed ZEC purchase is possible. We exclude Binance because it does not list ZEC in Dubai and provides no shielded withdrawal ahead of the EU's 2027 cut-off.

Gemini earns its place through shielded withdrawals. ZEC reaches your wallet already shielded, removing the transparent transfer that would otherwise link your exchange account to your private balance.

Zcash Regulation by Country

No major market has made owning Zcash illegal. Regulators differ sharply, however, on whether licensed businesses may sell it or hold it for customers.

The United States has moved furthest towards acceptance. On 25 August, the Zcash ETF, ticker ZCSH, began trading on NYSE Arca through a conversion of Grayscale's nine-year-old Zcash Trust. It holds spot ZEC in Coinbase custody and charges a 2.50% fee. Its holdings consist entirely of transparent coins, the same traceable form Coinbase and Gemini provide to retail buyers. That transparency allowed a privacy coin to pass a securities listing.

In the European Union, Article 79 of Regulation (EU) 2024/1624 bars banks and crypto-asset service providers from maintaining accounts that obscure transactions, including through anonymity-enhancing coins, from 10 July 2027. Until then, transparent-only ZEC remains listed across the EEA because MiCA permits anonymising coins where holders and their transaction history can be identified. EU holders should assume ZEC falls within the restriction, although no official list of affected coins exists.

Britain has neither banned nor endorsed Zcash. Exchanges register with the FCA under money laundering regulations. UK platforms' willingness to list ZEC while refusing Monero indicates where their compliance teams draw the line. Australia takes a similar approach. AUSTRAC imposes no privacy coin rule, and Coinbase, Swyftx and CoinSpot all list ZEC. Changes in availability are tracked in our Coinbase supported countries guide.

Licensed exchanges in Japan, South Korea and Dubai are barred from offering privacy coins. Dubai's VARA rulebook provides for fines of up to AED 50 million for a breach. Buyers in these markets may self-custody ZEC but cannot purchase it through a licensed venue. Our guide to the best privacy coins compares Zcash's optional shielding with Monero's mandatory privacy model that triggered these bans.

About Zcash

Launched in October 2016, Zcash is a Bitcoin fork developed by what is now the Electric Coin Company, led by Zooko Wilcox. It retains Bitcoin's 21 million supply cap and proof-of-work mining, alongside halvings every four years. The latest halving reduced the block reward to 1.5625 ZEC in November 2024. Zcash adds a zero-knowledge proof system that verifies transactions without revealing who sent what to whom, which our Zcash explainer covers in depth.

Users choose whether to keep their coins transparent or shielded. Addresses beginning with t behave like Bitcoin addresses, while shielded pools hide all transaction details. Roughly a quarter of all ZEC is now shielded, compared with single-digit percentages two years ago. That gives users far more coins to hide among.

On 29 May this year, a Shielded Labs researcher discovered a flaw in the Orchard pool's proof circuit that could theoretically have allowed ZEC to be minted without a trace. The pool's privacy made it impossible to prove whether anyone had exploited it. Within weeks, the price had halved.

Ironwood, formally the NU6.3 upgrade, sealed Orchard at block 3,428,143 on 28 July, with about 3.66 million ZEC inside. The upgrade opened a new pool using formally verified cryptography. A turnstile caps exits at verified deposits, preventing counterfeit coins from ever leaving.

Confidence recovered faster than most expected. The ETF listing and a wave of short liquidations pushed ZEC above $1,000 on 4 September. This was its highest price in almost a decade, with its market value approaching $17 billion. Our Zcash liquidation heatmap shows where leveraged positions cluster.

Bottom Line

Your location determines how you can buy Zcash. Americans, Britons, EU residents, Canadians and Australians can deposit into Coinbase by free bank transfer, then buy on the ZEC-USD order book at a 0.40% maker fee. New Yorkers use Gemini. Japan, South Korea and Dubai have no licensed sellers.

After buying, decide whether to shield your ZEC. This requires a wallet such as Zodl or a shielded withdrawal from Gemini, as every other exchange provides transparent coins. From 10 July 2027, licensed platforms must also stop holding ZEC for EU buyers.

We recommend Coinbase across all five markets for its liquid ZEC order books and licences covering each country. Buyers can also withdraw to their own wallets, covering what most need from an exchange. Our Coinbase review examines the rest of the platform.
